Anime can be great. I love anime, though I'm not a hardcore fan. I did notice there's a lot of variation in anime, and though some of the topics have become more mature over time, anime as a whole genre seems to be moving back to its roots, ie. lately anime seems to be targeting a younger audience again.
Love Hina
Just to avoid any confusion: I know Love Hina isn't a recent anime. It's just that some of the recent stuff I've seen reminded me of Love Hina, not just in concept but also because of the somewhat simplistic storyline and the generic art style (except for the McDonalds hair strands).
Back on topic... I tried Love Hina ages ago and... I dunno. To some a great and funny series, to me just average. I personally thought it was rather... predictable. That, or I'm getting old.
Some of the jokes can't be used anymore, as the world has become a little too 'woke' for them, dating the series. The overly wokies may object to the panty shots and non-nude bathing scenes, probably calling it "sexualization of teenage females" but I wasn't too bothered by any of it.
Then again, I'm old.
Summary
Young wannabe student becomes the house keeper for an all girls dormitory. Everything after that is chaotic, funny, but somewhat standard fare.
Guess I've seen too much Ranma, and all those boy / girl conflicts can get tiresome after a while. Some people say this is a great series though, so see for yourself.
Perhaps you should watch this before watching Ranma 1/2. After that one anything else gets somewhat stale when it comes to boy / girl jokes. (And if you watch Ranma then only watch the first three seasons. After that the animation gets bad and the stories even worse.)
End-of-year best-of-lists
Nearing the end of 2022 it made me muse... what do I like when it comes to anime? Well, it appears these are mostly older titles... I don't recall anything recent that really 'gut punched' me (except perhaps A Certain Scientific Railgun).
In no particular order...
- Noir (old but superb)
- Escaflowne (classic, romance / mecha combo)
- Black Legion (Revy's a psychotic bitch, but hey, we all love psychotic bitches)
- Scrapped Princess
- Ranma 1/2 (only the first three seasons)
- A Certain Magical Index / A Certain Scientific Railgun
- Avatar (The last airbender)
- Seis Manos (Kill Bill goes anime)
- Cowboy Bebop
- Ghost in the Shell (the movies and the first two TV series, not the later ones)
- Last Exile
- Now and then, here and there (should be obligatory watching for politicans and military personnel)
- Voices of a distant star
- Fullmetal Alchemist
- Fullmetal Panic
- Twelve Kingdoms
- Hunter X Hunter (if only for the tenacity of its makers)
