Perhaps not as good as the original Orphan Black (ignoring the nose-dive and recovery near the end of that show) but still quite interesting. I wasn’t expecting the killing of such an essential character near the end though… Was it to attract new viewers, or the original plan of the creators? Who can tell?
Counting down...
Nine days left.
Year's end is near, and so I do my regular count-down, which may include some reviews and musings. As this post is a series review I thought it would be a good moment to consider my own series top 3, before talking about Orphan Black Echoes...
... and that turns out to be hard, there are so many good shows! But in the end I settled on...
Top 3 TV shows
1. Farscape
As it's completely out-of-this-world - there's nothing like it.
2. Firefly
Somewhat similar but more serious, and with a single season way, way, way too short.
3. Fringe
The X-files, only better (it was either Fringe or Orphan Black. A very close call....
Runners-up
Runners up: Orphan Black, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, VR.5, Moon Knight, Loki, Sandman... There are so many great shows, but I had to limit myself to three.
Okay, with that out of the way, let's have a look at Orphan Black Echoes, but first a little warning...
Big Spoiler Warning
Okay, a big warning. Unfortunately the only way to talk about this show is to give the plot away, so...
BIG SPOILER WARNING!
You're still there? Okay. So, here we go...
3D Printed humans
As for the technology: 3D printing a human being is probably possible, but is it worth the effort? There are the obvious challenges... how do you transfer / write memories, and how do you keep the body alive whilst printing? But... when you think about it: wouldn't it be easier to simply scan and digitize them?
I haven’t watched Upload yet, but even Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future had digitized people, and that was a kid’s show 😁
Orphan Black
Why the Orphan Black link? It might have been interesting, but it was a wasted chance. This show didn't need the link, didn't need the time jump, and might even have worked better without all of that.
Unfinished
Unfortunately, there will not be another season as it was canceled. Which leaves lots of plot-threads unanswered.
The Verdict
Still, watch it, in spite of the complete lack of wrap-up. I know it's unusual for me to like a show that's incomplete, but in this case it's okay. We can make up the sequel ourselves.
(And no sequel is still better than a poor sequel, I'm getting pretty tired of those!)
