The cover suggests a fantasy novel, and yeah, it is. Raine Benaris is a seeker (a combination of sleuth / retriever / artifact blood hound) who finds herself involved in the search for a millennia old artifact that might lead the goblins to victory. Make that victories.
Backstory
When reading I had the feeling there must have been a lot of backstory, stuff we ain't seeing as a reader. And that's fine, I don't need full exposition of 'everything that happened before'. In this case the 'what happened before' may actually be quite interesting though. I wonder if this is a D&D character brought to (written) life, or if the author wrote an earlier work involving this character, but decided not to publish it.
As for the story itself, it's action / adventure, with a self deprecating heroine, who (of course) not only kicks ass, but kicks delicious ass of several handsome men. Well, no modern day fantasy without a strong injection of romance -- that's the world we live in.
Goblins, in this case, are not small, ugly pushovers, but a kind of anti-elves. Dark elves, if you want to get into D&D terminology, except these live above ground.
Verdict
Don't expect something heavy. This is fluff, but it's well written, enjoyable fluff, Rachel Aaron style. I'm up for the sequel.
Narration
Good, suits the character and the style of the book.
