Welcome to the Forgotten Realms. Back in 1990 TSR released Forgotten Realms Adventures, a hardcover book to help players and DMs update from (A)D&D to AD&D 2nd edition.
Content wise it's a little thin, but it was the very first TSR / D&D / RPG product I ever bought. For me, it's the book that started it all.
Forgotten Realms Adventures
Hard cover, 2nd edition, 154 pages. It starts with a little introduction to the Forgotten Realms, then addresses the changes that took place when the God's avatars walked the world, including:
- Changes - 11 pages
- Gods and Priests - 22 pages - descriptions on the different gods and their priests
- Magic and Mages - 24 pages - mostly spells, not much more
- Cities of the (Western) Heartlands - 51 pages - some rough maps and descriptions
- Secret Societies - 3 pages - better check out Cloak & Dagger
- Treasure - 24 pages
- Some appendixes
- 8 full color pages (Larry Elmore and others)
- some B&W artwork
