Datatalk / Kindle.
You can browse your library and retrieve all your purchased documents from your e-readers, but did you know you can send other, non-Amazon documents to your Kindle e-reader? Or send them to a friend, assuming they have an Amazon / Kindle account?
Different ways...
If it is your own Kindle and it has properly been activated then it's easy! (The default settings are typically fine.)
Bookfunnel explains it here (after pushing their own app, but why would you install their app and share your information with them?) but you should be fine with the steps below.
Note that not all document formats are supported, and that some non-Amazon epub files may not work properly.
I. The Windows Kindle Reader App is supported!
Yes, both physical readers and installed Windows Kindle Apps have their own email addresses. So if you don't have a Kindle e-reader, but someone sends you an e-book, or shares an e-pub with you, you can still read it on your PC.
II. Using the Amazon web interface
It's always hard to find the spots where Amazon hides its stuff, and this one isn't any different.
1. Go to amazon.nl/sendtokindle, or amazon.de/sendtokindle, or amazon.com/sendtokindle
2. Pick the 'Web' option
3. Drag your document onto the drop area and they will be send to your Kindle device or Kindle app
III. Using email
Look for the email address that belongs to your Kindle e-Reader or your Kindle Windows App.
1. Log in on Amazon
2. Accounts & Lists / Manage Content & Devices / Devices
The exact name / path can differ from country to country.
3. Select the device
4. It will now list the email address associated with your app or device
Note that you can find the email address of your Kindle e-reader on the device itself as well.
5. Write this down or copy it, it's going to be something like ninelizards_lksd789@kindle.com
6. Write an email. You have to send it from the email address you used for your Amazon account, and you must send it to the email address you just found.
7. Place the document inside that email and send it
If you changed email address since you started to use Amazon you may have to add your new email address by hand, see step V. at the bottom.
IV. Using the Amazon Send to Kindle Windows App
1. Download Send to Kindle for Windows (https://www.amazon.nl/sendtokindle/pc or equivalent)
2. Install
3. It will ask for email and password
4. Drag any document onto the app, or use the Send to Kindle option in Explorer
On my Windows 11 box this app would install, but would never show up. If that happens to you, you can create a link to the app:
6. You'll find the Kindle Windows app in
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Amazon\SendToKindle\SendToKindle.exe"
7. Create a shortcut to that app.
V. Receiving documents from other email addresses
Note that by default you can only receive documents per email from the email address you used to register with Amazon, or that you used to register your device (typically the same).
If you want to access something from another email address you have to add that email address to your 'whitelist', ie. to the list of persons that are allowed to send you a document.

1. Go to Account & Lists / Content & Devices / Preferences
Remember that different sites may have slightly different menus / names, and that Amazon has a habit of changing things over time.
2. Personal Document Settings
3. Make sure the option Personal Document Archiving is activated
4. Make sure the email address (that is going to be used to send you the document) is listed under Approved Personal Document Email. If it isn't, add it 😎
5. Now the person with the specified email address can send a document directly to your Kindle Device, Kindle Windows App, or to your Library
Important! Anyone you add can NOT see any of your personal information, change any settings, see what books you already have, buy books on your behalf, etc. You are still completely anonymous to that person!
Even then, you should only add people and email addresses you trust.
