Definitely (?) an indie writer, and one who isn't afraid to use real people, like Obama and Musk, as characters in his book. I'm not so sure that is a smart thing to do, because it will date the book rather quickly. Otherwise the book is more a technotriller than plain SF, with plausible technology.
Contemporary
It takes place in a contemporary setting, where an unknown spaceship has entered orbit around Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter. Humanity prepares a ship to travel there, but before it can depart several members of the crew get involved with IP theft, a new secret agency, machinations of part of the Chinese government (including attempts at sabotage as well as a missile launch) and more things like that. It’s interesting to read about both Space Shuttles as well as the Space-X and their (Big) Falcon.
Verdict
I’m not entirely sure if it’s an alternate timeline / version of our reality or not. I think it is, but I’m not entirely sure. All in all not that bad, actually. I'm going to try to find the sequel.
