HWInfo64 is a nice program, but it has two disadvantages:
1. It needs to run with Admin rights
2. It sometimes forgets the location of its (child) windows
That second one is a bummer, so here's a desktop link that make it a little easier to restore them.
Lazy
Now, I'm lazy and I don't want to re-drag my windows every time some game or other program messes up my desktop. I already have ReIcon64 for my desktop icons, but what about HWInfo64's windows?
Stupid
It can be done by retrieving the backed-up registry file, but I kept forgetting where it was. So, I had to make life easier...
Steps
1. Start HWInfo
2. Settings / Main Settings / Backup User Settings
This will create a file under "C:\Users\Admin\Documents\HWiNFO64_settings.reg" which is only accessible to users with Admin rights. I typically run as a local user.
3. Create a batch file "hwinfo_restore.bat" with the following contents:
C:\Users\Admin\Documents\HWiNFO64_settings.reg
start "" C:\software\hwinfo\HWiNFO64.exe
Adjust the paths above as needed.
4. Create a shortcut to that batch file "hwinfo_restore.bat"
5. RMB on that shortcut / Properties / Advanced / Run as Administrator
Now, whenever HWInfo64 windows are 'lost' you just exit HWInfo64, double click that newly created link, and it will start HWInfo64 with all windows in the right place.
