Summer Glau has a pendant for Sci-Fi 'nerdish' shows. Unfortunately, they're not all successful, but apparently her choice in roles matches my taste in television...
Summer Glau
It's a pity she often picks shows that are cancelled early. Is it her? Is it her pick of shows? It's sad, because - even though I like Summer Glau - almost everything she touches dies an early dead... argh!
In some ways, she reminds me of Amy Acker, but where Amy Acker is a nerd (screen wise) Summer is more of a non-human. Both actresses though are great at portraying human beings / aliens / characters with a couple of screws loose.
Shows featuring Summer Glau
Firefly (2002)
(And there's the 2005 movie, of course.)
Superb series. Canceled way to early.
The 4400 (2004)
Summer featured in seven episodes... I can't recall the eps though. The series was okay.
The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008)
Two seasons. Summer plays Cameron, a female Terminator. This show is actually better than everything else (Terminator related) that came after Terminator 2.
Definitely a must-watch.
Dollhouse (2009)
What actually helped this show were both season endings. That sounds weird, but the show itself wasn't bad anyway. The endings though complement and invert expectations in an interesting way.
Alphas (2011)
Just 4 episodes. The show itself was good, and good enough in spite of the somewhat open ending.
The Cape (2011)
My memory is a bit rusty on this one. Was it good? Not really. But I remember that I liked the very weird ending ('the white toilet paper'). I think I have to re-watch this one. If only for the ending 😎
Arrow (2012)
Summer played in 7 episodes or so, and wasn't a main character. As for Arrow (the show) it just kept on going, and after a while it just got plain boring.
Wu Assassins (2019)
Good idea, poor execution. Skip it.
The Sarah Connor Chronicles
What if the future decided to send more help back into the past? And why would it do so?
TSCC is a clear sequel to Terminater 2, and it's a good show. Lena Headey (Beacon 23, Game of Thrones) takes over from Linda Hamilton as John Connor's mom (and she's well casted). Summer Glau is yet another Terminator (and a pretty one at that) causing John Connor all sorts of problems, not in the least because Cameron isn't human.
Some gags are pretty predictable, but there are some decent fight scenes and character 'explorations' as well.
And look at that promotional poster... It gave me the creeps at the time, but it's great.
TSCC Ending and cancellation
The ending seems a bit rushed, overcomplicated, and is an enormous cliffhanger - all at once!
But I think that's in some ways deliberate. I think the creators figured out there wouldn't be a third season, so they tried to make the best of it and created an ending that is both a cliffhanger (just in case there would be another season), and a worthy ending of the series.
Though I would have preferred yet another season I think the ending works. Think about it: once you start messing with time you are changing (future) events and thus whole timelines. Depending on your concept of time travel you either wipe out the alternatives, or you're creating additional, alternative timelines. If you opt for the latter, then all Terminator movies make sense, as they each play in an alternative timeline.
(Though all the Terminator movies after number 2 are bad, bad, bad. No matter what timeline 😎)
The Verdict
Go and watch, in spite of the cliffhanger-ending.
