Harper North - Manipulated 1 - Modified

Audiobook Review.

Apocalyptic setting. Check. Female teen protagonist. Check. First Person Present Tense. Check.

What could go wrong? Well, a lot. A regular dose of disbelief won't work on this one. Slave / miner / teen girl gets injected with some kind of genetic mod and becomes Miss Perfect. Ah... that should have been a red flag.

Sorry, the story just doesn't seem to work.

Narration

Yes, an audiobook. Which literally falls flat, thanks to the narrator, who simply sounds like an AI text-to-speech generator, with 9 out of 10 sentences 'bending down'. Flattening out. Lacking intonation, emotion, character.

Synopsis

Euh... Miner girl escapes from her corporate dungeon and goes topside. Well, that's it. That's where I put the book away and couldn't stand it anymore

The Verdict

Skip it. This is one of those books that should have been torn apart by a decent beta reader or editor, and then completely rewritten, probably seriously darkening it up. As it stands now it shouldn't have been published, sorry. I'd say an amateur writer, but... if he / she improves so might her work. This book though... nah.
