Series Review + Apple TV + Sugar
Season one episode one. Very weird, but I love it. I've just finished episode one, and... this is weird.
Who is John Sugar? What is John Sugar?
Weird
This is supposed to be a cross over between Scifi and Detective Noir, so there's no way I can resist this.
First impression: weird. Private detective voice-overs (always do it for me). Gumshoe. But a gumshoe that spreads favors, hands out money to strangers. Has some techno gadgets, a weird trust in people, a weirder knowledge of movies. Speaks a lot of languages, has a lot of money, and only one job: he finds people.
Then the visuals. Narrative is choppy, here / there, not entirely linear but it works. Some parts are shot in black and white, some are set in the past, and there are clips from old B&W Hollywood movies inserted here and there. And to top it off, Colin Farrell exudes cool. (That car helps 😅)
This show must go on!
I hope the series isn't too expensive, and that Apple TV will take it to two or three seasons with a decent closure. For now, I just enjoy the ride. Lessee where this takes me...
My first guess: John Sugar is an alien... Like Alan Tudyk's Alien Resident, but this isn't a comedy... This is a detective, but somehow I sense conspiracies and even a thin slice of They Live perhaps? Peacekeeper aliens? The X-files, but inside-out?
Time for episode 2!
