Apple TV - Murderbot - s01e01..s01e06

Series Review + Apple TV

It's on Apple, and Apple appears to be doing a banging good job when it comes to SciFi shows. Severance. Silo. For All Mankind. Foundation. 3 Body Problem. Pretty good.

You can now add Murderbot to that list.

The books

... are great. Take an autistic human / robot hybrid, let it go rogue, then let it observe humanity and events, and comment on it in the most cynical way.

Gotta love it. The books may edge a little towards the woke side now and again - especially the later books - but they're still great.

(Note: I define 'woke' as those who push their beliefs down other throats, no matter what. From that definition religious extremists are also extremely woke...)

The series

To convert a high tech setting like that to a television series is hard. Add the preposition and attitude of the sec unit / murderbot, and the endless commentary on human nature and you have quite a challenge.

The producers of the show have chosen to take it to the extreme, making the 'alternative scientists' the closest thing to space hippies. At first that grated a bit, but the show doesn't make a joke of itself. It's not meant to be funny. Or just funny. Or only funny. The fun is in the way the show observes us - humanity - and how deadly honest it is about that. And to make that work, everything is played a bit over the top.

(The show in a show Sanctuary Moon is not just a little over the top. It's completely blown out of proportion.)

Fortunately, Murderbot - played by Alexander Skarsgård - is as cynical as they get, and it just works.

So, the first five episodes were more or less in line with the story and style, but the sixth episode deviates a bit. Murderbot shows way more emotions than in the books. Now I'm wondering where they will take it... (That kill was a little suprising, heh 😏)

And that... felt good...

The bad

I want seasons of 22 episodes! Not these 'short' seasons that appear to haunt the streaming services!

We're already at episode 6, and the whole first season will only last 10 episodes. That's not enough...
