I had high hopes for season 2 of Arcane... Season 1 was brilliant, an emotional roller coaster, great animation, and a good story to carry it all. How could season 2 be any less?
Well... it turned out it could be. Worse, that is.
Worse
Season 2 - still carrying the same great animation - tries its best to push the same emotional buttons... but does that way to obvious. It tries to solve each and every subplot of season 1, but does so in a hurry, cramped and forced. It throws in some new elements, adds complications, and doesn't explain much.
It's a mess.
Okay, but...
So, it's way worse than the first season. Still okay, but... rushed. Messy. Barely above average. Without season 2 Arcane would have been a classic. Now it's still better than average, but the sum brings it down.
Some additional seasons would have helped. A lot. So many questions left unanswered. Or perhaps some may have been answered, but didn't register with me. For example...
Who are those godlike characters on the other side of the... 'hextech' magical chaos ball? (Or whatever it's called.)
What's with Mel and the whole 'black rose magic users' stuff? What happened to her brother?
Did Jinx survive? Will Vi and Caitlyn live happily ever after?
Where's Heimerdinger? What's going on with all the alternate universe stuff?
There are so many, so many subplots that might have deserved a full season. But instead we get a bit of typical, standard anime 'god-like' beings, to be fought. And that's about it.
The Verdict
Okay.
For once, I would be tempted to suggest to stick to the open ending of season 1. That's... baffling.
(Although, to be honest, season 2 of Warrior Nun was bad, and so was season 2 of Shadow and Bone. Good first seasons simple give no guarantee on decent second seasons, unfortunately.)
