Movie Review / Audiobook Review.
There's a movie, and there's a book. I've seen and read both. The movie wasn't too bad, although the main character in the movie seems a bit 'soft' compared with the book.
Both movie and book are okay, but aimed at the angsty teen crowd hungering for some apocalyptical romance.
Short
In the future, the world is destroyed, and the survivors live in a city where each person is placed in one of five factions, each factions following a specific ethos: Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the kind), Erudite (the intelligent), Abnegation (the selfless), and Candor (the honest).
Tris, the main character, is a divergent, someone who doesn't belong to a single faction, breaks out of Abnegation and rebels a bit.
Narration
As for the book… it’s a bit whiny, and the narrator of the audiobook makes it even more so.
Books
This is part one of a trilogy. I still have to read the other two. I found these books a bit whiny, but can see how they might appeal to some.
The main reason I worked my way through this one is to find out how other writers deal with first-person present-tense, which can sometimes be more difficult than it seems.
Movies
There were three movies, but they do not line up entirely with the books. The fourth movie was never made.
Personally, I think the main character for the movies appears 'too soft' when compared with the Tris from the books.
Verdict
Unless you have a crush on the dark and brooding type you might skip this. Then again, if the dark and brooding type is your thing, then go for it.
Oh, and the books are better than the (first) movie (though I doubt the later movies improved much, but I can't really say as I haven't seen them).
