Review.
Netflix added a number of Anime series last year, and one of those is the 12 episode Sirius the Jaeger. Vampires and werewolves seem to be as popular as ever, so you guess what this show is about...
Character design
Aside of the obligatory little evil twin sisters all characters are distinctive. I found the vampire (slaves) looking more like werewolves, and the werewolves not looking like werewolves at all.
It even took me quite some time to realize they were supposed to be werewolves (to me they looked like just another kind of vampires).
Animation
Good enough.
Setting
Pre-WW2, inside the Japanese empire. From my own experience I can tell you that a foreigner wouldn't simply be 'ignored' when mingling with locals, especially in a time when there were less of them around.
In fact, even these days, when traveling through remote areas of Japan or China, people still stare at the average 'gweiloo'.
It's also rather unlikely the main cast speaks perfectly Japanese. Make sure your suspension of disbelief is firmly switched on. Then again, how realistic are vampires after all? 😄
Plot
Minor spoilers upcoming...
Nothing we've not seen before. Young boy sees his own village murdered, and joins a group of vampire hunters (the 'Jaeger' from the title). Of course he's somehow involved in the murder of his own hometown, and even in the creation of the vampire race.
I think there would have been space for some backstory of the supporting cast, but there is little to none.
Verdict
Passable.
Average anime fair, visually okay but the plot lets it down a bit. Mind you, there's a lot worse out there.
I watched this on NetFlix. There just might be another season, I wouldn't know, and if so such a second season wasn't on NetFlix. Duh.
Anyway, if you need to watch something with a bit more flair, more vampires, more story, and more episodes 😄 then get yourself a copy of, for example, Blood Plus. Much better but unfortunately not on Netflix...
