The cheapest filament ever (and where to find product details on orders on AliExpress)

3D Printing + Cheap Filament

Well, there must be cheaper, but this was the cheapest I ever found so far... 10 kilo of PETG, for  5.17 euro per kilogram, including shipping from Spain.

I've ordered it, and it should arrive tomorrow. When checking my order, I found a few interesting details that have me ever so slightly worried... if a. I'll ever going to get it, and b. what the hell is it?

PETG pricing

In the long run, PETG should become cheaper than PLA, due to the cheaper materials used in manufacturing. PLA has been hovering around the 20..25 euro per kilogram when ordering locally in the Netherlands, and 10..15 euro per kilogram when ordering on AliExpress.

Long term I expect PLA to end up at a steady 10 euro per kilogram, and PETG one or two euros below that.

So, when I spotted an offer of 54.40 euro for 10 kg PETG (after a little discount 5.17 euro per kilogram) I took the plunge and ordered what could be the worst PETG in the universe. Or I might have fallen for some outright scam. Only the future can tell...

Current status

Waiting for delivery

You might try https://www.17track.net/en to track your shipment. It sometimes works where the native DHL webpage doesn't.

Has it been shipped?

Tracking information hasn't been updated (?) but if you click on that line I get a tracking code, which appears to be DHL. And yes, I can enter that code on the DHL side, and it shows it has been shipped, and is expected to arrive on the 21st.

Note that the AliExpress page says it has been picked up the 16th, but the DHL page says it has been picked up the 19th. And that the DHL page suggests it hasn't arrived yet in NL.

Now, yesterday DHL's estimated delivery date was August 20. So it changes. What will it be tomorrow?

No longer available

Someone asked if it was still available. The answer: no. Checking the product page (by clicking on the image of the order on the My Orders page results in an oooopsie...

Also, the shop in question (SMIC Technologies Store) is closed for holidays... Let's hope not forever...

Order details

AliExpress has been getting worse and worse over the years (I could write a book about that) but let's have a good look at what I've ordered.

As many shops list multiple items at different prices, but the descriptions are often too long, and they often take down or change their product pages, it's sometimes hard to check what you exactly have bought. There's a way to find out, but it is illogical.

1. Go to the My Orders page

2. Click on Order Details

3. Scroll down until you see the image of the product you ordered

4. Click on the little camera symbol below that (red circle below)

Clicking on that camera will bring up a (partial) screen dump of the moment you ordered the product. It isn't a full screen dump, and there's some additional (and incomplete) text, but it's better than nothing...

Now, sometimes the information in the top section of Product Information (Product gegevens) MAY DIFFER from the original listing. I have no clue how that works, and I've seen it only once or twice...

I don't know if they changed anything in this specific case. But when revisiting, I spotted this interesting line:

So... how should I read that? If it's PLA it causes cancer? That's a very, very weird line...

Brand

No (real) brand was listed... Scrolling down, there's the regular PETG specs, which you may or may not believe, followed by a bunch of images of packaging that suggest this might be Enotepad stuff (Jayo is a B-brand for Sunlu, and if I'm not mistaken, Enotepad is the B-Brand for Jayo), so without a doubt it's going to be pretty bad 😎

And of course, at the bottom, this little nugget:

You gotta' love AliExpress.

Is it any good?

How would I know? It hasn't arrived yet! I don't even know if it ever will...

Update

Nothing arrived yet... but I think I found some more 'useless' shops... Is it the same vendor / scammer?

Well, the story continues here...
