Countdown to 2024 - Nine Writing Tips Before Christmas - #9 - Write readable

Countdown / Writing.

Actually, it's nine hints before the end of the year, but this sounds better 🤔😁

Matt asked me for nine tips... Hmmm... So, here's number 9:

Write Readable

... but that is not a tip. That's the same thing I tell everyone.

Decide if you want to be a writer

My first thought was the one thing that I keep telling every wannabe writer:

Decide if you want to be a writer.

That's all there is to it.

Do you have what it takes to be a writer? Are you willing to spend all those hours? Do you want to be read, rich, and famous?

Or is this just a fine minute fluke, something you decided yesterday, and a quest you will abandon tomorrow, when you become the worlds' most popular vlogger, or the day thereafter, where you will establish your new alternative woolen socks brand...

How serious are you? Can you, will you, and do you want to spend all your time on writing? The answer, obviously, is yes, so as a hint or tip this won't work. But... one of the consequences (of trying to become a writer who will be read) is that you have to write stuff that people want to read and -- drumroll -- can read. So, here's the real tip:

Write Readable.

Because if people can't stand the grammar mistakes, and find themselves confused by your creative use of punctuation, pronouns, viewpoints and tense, then why the frell would they spend time on your story?

They will not.

How serious are you? How serious am I?

9 days to go until the end of 2023, and I've decided to make 2024 a better year. I might not be able to make it the best year ever, but I'm going to work hard to get as close as possible. So, let me make a public statement aka promise: next year I will release AT LEAST TWO books. Period.

And as we're ending 2023 and we talk about good intentions I decided to share my other targets with you:

1. Release TWO books

2. Loose 20 kilos

3. Find a good home for my eldest daughter

Can I do it? If you can be a writer, then I should be able to achieve my targets as well! And next year I'll tell you how badly I failed 😏

So, here's the challenge: write that damned book you're planning to, so I no longer have an excuse to delay mine! Go for it!
