Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff - Aurora Burning / Aurora's End

Audiobook Review.

Very good. Very, very good. Ah, the first review of 2023 should be a positive one, shouldn't it?

I thought they couldn't pull it off. Ending the first book with an overpowered enemy is one of the two 'beginning writers' problems. (The other one is an overpowered protagonist.)

But they managed to do it. They managed to pull it off.

Titles

  1. Aurora Rising
  2. Aurora Burning
  3. Aurora's End

Time Travel

I saw this one coming a mile ahead, so I don't think it's really a spoiler mentioning it here. What was surprising is that it did fit the story. If it's a retrofit (because the writers managed to write themselves into a corner) then it is a well executed one.

Audiobook

That narration is good. I think it's mostly the same cast as who did The Illuminae Files, so I would suggest to keep some time between reading these two series to avoid confusion. Nevertheless, they found the right voices, tone, mannerisms. In general I'm not a big fan of multi POV / multi actor narration, but if it has to be done, it has to be done this way. Great stuff.

The Verdict

The whole series is great. Nice characters, good plot, romance isn't overly cheesy and great character interaction and banter. Going to look for more stuff by these authors.

Synopsis (minor Spoilers)

Two ancient races fought in the past. One an ever-expanding, all-assimilating race of plants, the other the two-legged progenitors of all the other intelligent races that came after. The latter also left an incredible weapon behind, and Auri, freshly recovered after two centuries of cryo-sleep, has received the power to use it. She and a band of fresh cadets (aka misfits) find themselves on the run for Earth's (not so) secret service, fighting monsters (including parents), doing a little bank robbery, time travel, and finally self-sacrifice to save the universe. And in between they find themselves falling in love. (The 'fistbump Warror Princess' scene had me laughing out loud.)
